Are you ready for Earth Hour?

Earth Hour 2013Earth Hour will take place this year on March 23rd.  Organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the international environmental campaign encourages people to turn off their lights for one hour beginning at 8:30 PM (the participant’s local time).  The purpose of the event is to raise awareness on climate change and show support for a sustainable future.

Earth Hour was launched in Sydney, Australia in 2007, with more two million residents participating in the campaign.  Today, thousands of cities and towns worldwide are involved in the event.

Campaign highlights for Earth Hour 2013 include the planting of 100,000 trees in Botswana.  Former Botswana President Mr. Festus Mogae has promised one million trees will be planted in the region over the next four years.  The tree planting is part of his “I Will If You Will” Earth Hour challenge.

Do The Green Thing, an environmental charity, is running a new poster each day as part of the Earth Hour build-up.  You can see all 23 campaign posters here.

You can participate in the Earth Hour campaign by signing the Earth Hour pledge, initiating or accepting an “I Will If You Will Challenge”; voting in the “People’s Choice” award, a year-long competition among cities to prepare for extreme weather and promote renewable energy, and taking action in your own city in support of a sustainable future.
